WHAT IS BMD
Bone mineral densitometry (BMD) is an apparatus that precisely measures calcium and other compositions of our body. The primary role is to assess diseases related to altered bone density, most commonly osteoporosis (brittle bone). It can also be used to define the body’s fat, muscle and water components which are important for patients undergoing an exercise / physical training program. Only negligible amount of x-ray at different energies are used to create the image and the data is compared against the database of healthy individuals. It is important to remember that you should perform BMD studies on the same machine each time for consistency of results as each machine is calibrated slightly differently.
BEFORE THE BMD TEST
What to Bring:
- Your request form
- Any relevant previous imaging
- Your Medicare card
We will schedule your BMD test, and you’ll receive an appointment date and time. One of our expert staff will contact you 1-2 days before your scan to discuss any medications you may be taking.
You will be asked to fill out a questionnaire about your health and current medications.
Clothing: Wear comfortable clothing without any metal buttons, eyelets, zips or jewellery, as these can interfere with the test. You may be asked to change into a gown for your scan.
DURING THE SCAN
Positioning: You’ll typically lie down on a table, and the BMD machine will scan specific parts of your body, usually the spine, hip, and/or forearm. You may be asked to remain very still during the test.
Duration: The test is quick, usually taking just a few minutes for each area being scanned.
No Discomfort: The BMD test is painless and does not involve needles or any uncomfortable procedures.
AFTER THE BMD TEST
You can resume your normal activities after a BMD.
